Happy Paws Happy Hearts
Origins:
Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) was founded in 2014 by Zoe Black and Graeme Caplen after they saw how their foster dogs brought comfort and connection to socially isolated family members. What began as a simple idea grew into a national initiative that brings people and rescue animals together to heal and grow. Through hands-on programs in shelters and online, participants—such as veterans, people with disabilities, and older adults—gain confidence, skills, and a sense of belonging while helping animals become more adoptable through training and socialization. From veteran support programs to partnerships with shelters across Australia, HPHH continues to bridge the gap between isolation and connection, transforming lives with the power of companionship.
About HPHH:
Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) exists to connect socially isolated people with rescue animals in need of care, creating benefits for both. Through partnerships with shelters and animal welfare organizations across Australia, HPHH runs structured programs where participants work hands-on with animals each week. These sessions build confidence, social skills, and community for people, while helping animals receive the training and socialization they need for adoption.
Programs are tailored to different needs, ranging from basic animal care to intensive training streams for veterans, first responders, and people with disabilities. Participants often leave with stronger self-esteem, better communication skills, and pathways into volunteering, education, or work. At the same time, the animals they care for become more adoptable.
In short, HPHH delivers on its mission by addressing two challenges—human isolation and animal welfare—through one compassionate solution that transforms lives on both sides.
